Overview

Fun Phonics is a decoding program for teaching reading skills to beginning readers in Grades K-3 and struggling readers in grades 1-12. It can be used in conjunction with other reading curricula to strengthen decoding skills in conjunction with “whole language” or phonics-based reading programs. Its flexibility enables teachers, aides and tutors to integrate decoding skills into the reading program chosen by any school. It is a supplement to, not a substitute for, a full reading program. It is a high-quality, research based program for teaching struggling readers. It is an ideal program to supplement instruction in Response to Intervention Programs at Tiers 2 and 3.

There are two keys to the method. One is making the child feel respected, valued and rewarded in the learning process. The second is building in success through careful sequencing of the learning tasks.

The Gallistel-Ellis Test of Coding Skills is a widely used assessment tool for identifying the specific decoding tasks which your student has mastered, which ones he or she is struggling with, and the tasks yet to be learned. It is an excellent place to start in any program to teach struggling readers. Its reliability and validity have been extensively documented in research, and in practical use.

Each Fun Phonics Kit includes a comprehensive Teacher's Manual, a set of Word Lists which provide students with structured practice in word recognition, a set of Charts of key phonic structures, and a set of Games and Activities which.

Each Kit contains the following materials to teach skills measured in the GE Test of Coding Skills:

• a manual with clear instructions and suggestions for teaching both reading and spelling that
ensure that each child succeeds each time

• carefully organized word lists with built-in review that help children to read words step-by-step

• games and activities that reinforce the lessons and keep students motivated

• charts which can be posted and referenced while teaching that provide practice and reinforce memory
